Church Family Life

ALPHA course

Friday 20th January 2012 at 7pm

Is there more to life than this? (Introduction to ALPHA)

There is an exiting opportunity to take part in the next Alpha course at the Heritage Centre.

It starts with a free meal in the Heritage Centre Cafe at 7pm with the introductory talk afterwards.

Taking part in ALPHA gives participants an opportunity to ask questions about the Christian faith as well as listening to talks about things like who is Jesus, faith, guidance, healing and evil. No question is considered too small.

A typical ALPHA evening consists of food, talk and then discussion. It is pitched at an introductory level. Having said this, it is suitable for both people with no church background as well as those who have had previous contact with the Christian faith.

There will be about 12 sessions meeting once a week. People often find that new friendships are formed and they discover that God can actually be experienced in their own life.

The course is free of charge and there is no obligation to continue with it once started.

What is the Alpha course?

Alpha is a low-pressure, fun and informative course. It is a place to relax, share your thoughts and explore the meaning of life. The course is designed primarily for people who don't go to church, but are interested in the Christian faith.

How Alpha began

The Alpha course began in the late 1970s at Holy Trintiy Church Brompton as a means of helping new Christians learn more about the Christian faith.

In 1990, former barrister Nicky Gumbel realised the potential of the Alpha course to appeal to a wider audience, and adapted the course to make it inclusive for anyone interested in the Christian faith.

The growth of Alpha in the UK and worldwide

The Alpha course spread during the 1990s, initially in the UK and then internationally, as more and more churches and groups found it a helpful and informal way to discuss questions about the Christian faith.

There are now over 55,000 courses worldwide in 166 countries. Alpha is supported by all the major denominations.
